The Sovereignty of God

The first thing you must do in any endeavor is learning how it works. As believers, understanding the sovereignty of God is essential to understanding and coping with the unexpected pain, problems, confusion, and tragedies of life. I like to call it the big picture!

The sovereignty of God means that God rules over all creation; nothing happens unless God causes it to happen or consciously allows it to happen.

When you understand that this is the kind of God, we serve you will take the issue of His authority seriously.

God’s sovereignty means that God exercises His prerogative to do what He pleases with His creation. The earth, the fullness thereof, the world, and those that dwell within are the Lord’s.

Understanding God’s sovereignty is critical because Satan has programmed humanity to live independently of God and does not want anyone to rule over him.

If you do not understand the sovereignty of God, you will constantly be trying to blame others, circumstances, conditions, government, economy, taxes, et. for the unexpected pain, problems, confusion, and tragedies of life.

In His sovereignty, God says this is what I want to happen, or He says this is not what I want to happen, but I am going to allow it to happen to cause what I want to happen.

The sovereignty of God provides us with the proper perspective through which to view all of life. When you get the sovereignty of God, straight your life will begin to take shape.

If God is your referenced point, you will be able to make sense of the senselessness all around you. If your circumstances are your reference point, you will not be able to make sense of life or God because you have a worldly view of life.

If you understand the sovereignty of God, you cannot believe in fate, coincidence, luck, or happenstance. To believe in these things suggest that they happen haphazardly, with no control; they show up.

Therefore, the governing reference point for life must be the sovereignty of God. That means you cannot look at your life circumstances first as the reference point of life.

When life treats you in a way that you believe is wrong, God is still in control; when it’s unjust, it doesn’t mean it’s not God! When God allows people to do things to those committed to Him, he allows it for good reasons. Job 1:6-12, 1Kings 22:21-23
